How much does a WhatsApp chatbot cost, and what changes the final bill
Anyone searching for how much a WhatsApp chatbot costs almost always gets the same useless answer: it depends. It does depend, but you can know on what. This article covers the pricing models on the market, what usually hides outside the advertised price, and how to turn all of it into a number that means something for your business, which is your cost per conversation.
The sticker price is the least important part
Two tools with the same monthly fee can cost wildly different amounts by the end of the month, because what weighs is not the advertised number, it is the pricing model. Understanding the model is what protects you from signing up cheap and paying dearly.
The four ways you will be charged
- Per agent. You pay per person using the panel. It stays predictable while the team is small and climbs as you hire, even when conversation volume does not move.
- Per conversation. You pay per conversation started or per service window. This is the model that surprises people the most, because the bill grows exactly in the good month, when the ads work and people show up.
- Per message sent. Similar to the previous one, only more sensitive. An assistant that replies in several short bubbles costs more than one that replies in blocks.
- Flat plan with a usage quota. You pay a fixed amount and get a monthly quota. It is the easiest to forecast, as long as the quota is clear and you know where to track consumption.
No model is wrong by nature. The mistake is picking the model that fights your business. If you live off campaigns and volume swings, per conversation pricing turns every good month into a scare on the invoice.
What changed in Meta's billing, and why it lands on your invoice
Until July 1, 2025, Meta charged per conversation: a 24 hour window for a flat amount. Since that date billing is per delivered message, and the amount varies with the message category and the country of the receiving number. Until September 30, 2026, a message you sent inside an open customer service window, replying to the customer, was not charged. Starting October 1, 2026, Meta also charges for those replies at the utility message price for the country, after an allowance of 1,000 free per month on each number. A conversation that starts from a click to WhatsApp ad keeps 72 hours without charge.
This lands on your invoice for a practical reason. When a vendor advertises per conversation billing, it is using a yardstick the platform no longer uses, and the gap shows up exactly in your highest volume month. Ask in writing what they call a conversation, and what happens when the customer replies the next day.
What usually sits outside the advertised price
This is the part that blows budgets. Before comparing monthly fees, ask whether these are included:
- Setup and initial configuration.
- Who writes the content of the answers, you or the vendor.
- Changes after go-live, when you change a price, a service or your hours.
- Human support, and on which channel and hours.
- An extra number, when you want sales and support kept apart.
- Integration with your calendar, management system or catalog.
A cheap tool that needs an agency to keep the flow alive costs more than a slightly pricier tool you adjust yourself in five minutes.
A flow chatbot costs less, and delivers less
A good share of what is sold as a cheap chatbot is an options menu: press 1 for a quote, press 2 to talk to someone. It works for simple triage and it genuinely is cheaper. The problem shows up when the customer writes outside the script, which is what they do in real life. The difference between that kind of bot and an AI agent that understands a question however it is written is in chatbot or AI customer service.
What about a free WhatsApp chatbot?
It exists, and it has its place. The WhatsApp Business app itself already sends a greeting message and an away message at no cost. That solves the after hours notice, and it does not solve customer service: they are fixed texts, the same for everybody, that do not answer prices, do not clear doubts and do not book anything.
Genuinely free tools tend to cap contacts, messages or features, and the cap shows up right when things start working. Free is great to test the idea, and it is rarely where you stay.
How much Meu Auxiliar costs
Here the model is a flat plan with a monthly quota, with no charge per message and no charge per agent. Plans are shown in your own currency on the pricing page, along with what each one includes.
Usage is measured in credits. A full conversation tends to consume around 185 credits and a short one lands near 120. It is an estimate, not a promise: it varies with how long conversations run and how much the AI has to look up to answer.
The math that matters: cost per conversation
Take the monthly fee and divide it by the number of conversations it covers. Then compare that with two things you already know: what your own hour costs and what one customer is worth to you.
If you handle ten people a day on WhatsApp and each one takes five minutes between reading, replying and chasing a response, that is almost an hour of your day, every day. That is the expense that already exists and that nobody puts in the spreadsheet.
How to decide without getting it wrong
- Write down how many new conversations you get per month. That number picks the plan, not the vendor's marketing.
- Prefer a pricing model that does not punish your good month.
- Ask in writing what is included and what is billed separately.
- Test with your real questions, the hard ones, not with the salesperson's canned demo.
- Check whether you can change prices and hours yourself without depending on a third party.
